When doing pet and equine portraits, I try my best to capture the personality of the animal that clients love so dearly. Creating pet and equine portraits is about more than just capturing their physical appearance; it's about immortalizing their spirit – their personality, quirks, and unique traits that make them beloved companions. Each animal has its distinct character, whether it's the mischievous glint in a cat's eye or the gentle demeanor of a horse. When I photograph these animals, I focus not only on their outward appearance but on their expressions, body language, and little details that make them so unique.
The particular curiousity, affections, annoyances, and stances of different animals are so interesting to observe. These nuances are what I strive to capture – the moment that encapsulates the unique spirit of an animal.
Ollie (top left) & Brody (top right) are so curious, and always looking for a treat or trying to see who's in the barn. For George (middle left), it's his relaxed, lazy demeanor, and his favourite blanket. Roscoe (above) is an explorer, he is active and loves climbing trees. TJ & Buffy (bottom left) love to play and are such a fun, silly pair.
I often spend time observing and interacting with the pets or horses I'm portraying, trying to understand their unique personalities. Whether it's through a playful, vibrant painting or a carefully composed photograph, my goal is to evoke the emotions and connections that the owners have with their beloved companions. It's incredibly rewarding to see clients recognize and connect with these captured moments, feeling like they've truly brought a piece of their cherished animal's spirit into their homes.
