The objective of the Environmental Conference Campaign project was to create a design policy to represent the assigned conference title. This design policy was then applied across 3 project phases: a poster, a website, and a programme booklet. This project required attention to fine details and learning new typographic systems and rules.
Background
The Flowing Forward conference is a conference on the future of freshwater resources, that brings together activists, advocates, specialists and anyone who wants to learn more about freshwater and threats to its resources. The conference presents an opportunity for attendees to learn more about the future of freshwater, and push to protect freshwater resources.
Concept
The concept that is used throughout the campaign is a waterscape based around a water- fall. Throughout each component of the campaign the colour palette continuously consists of a teal-blue colour scheme. The main concept is a waterscape, containing a waterfall and an underwater scene, with bubbles to mimic the details within the letter O in the title cluster.
Typography
Throughout the campaign the typeface used is Avenir; in styles light, book, medium, and heavy. Avenir is a very versatile typeface, as it has many different weights and is legible at both very large and very small sizes. Throughout the campaign, Avenir medium and book are used consistently in smaller headings and the body copy, while heavy is used in larger headings. Avenir light is only used in the word cluster for the conference title.
Layout
The two main components of the layout are the main waterfall illustration that contains a straight edge at the bottom, and the secondary underwater scene, which contains an organic, wavy shape for the underwater soil, and a dark background for the water. There are also accent illustrations of bubbles and any images are placed in circular frames to match other shapes within the designs.
The straight edge of the waterfall presented many different opportunities for alignment or colour transitions, and the organic underwater scene was used to add a more dynamic element in some places. Repeating these illustrations, consistently re-using typographic elements, and consistently using rounded shapes help to create a level of cohesion throughout the campaign.
